Filtering recirculating air in residential heating & air conditioning systems serves mainly two purposes.
One is the prevention of dirt accumulation on components like evaporator coils to maintain a good efficiency /
low energy consumption rate.
The other benefit is the cleaning of the air from dust, allergens and irritating substances. Filters with high efficiencies usually have a tighter filter media which increases the flow resistance. While the filter is collecting more dust, the resistance increases even more, and the air volume (cfm = cubic feet per minute) decreases. High efficiency filters should be changed more often. Some filters use a MERV classification to rate it's efficiency. Common ratings are between 8 and 12, with MERV 12 being the most efficient filter. Although filters do improve the indoor air quality (IAQ), they will not guarantee a low contaminant level. Filtered air on the return air side can pick up dust or mold from the ductwork. And for sure, everytime a person enters the room or a door is opened, some particulate matter comes in... Running the blower of the HVAC system all the time as a large air cleaning device is recommended sometimes for asthma or allergy sufferers.
